Glossary

HR - Home Run. This is why we are all here. The use of various balls over the course of Home Run Derby's history has caused the number of home runs hit to swing wildly. Therefore, the absolute number of home runs hit by players in rounds and over a career has been replaced by Wins and Rating as the definitive statistical measures of player performance.

W - Wins. A player who finishes a round with the most HR in a round is awarded 1 win.

Clutch - Clutch factor, showing a player's performance in the clutch. Higher numbers indicate better performance in hit-offs. A factor of 1 indicates that a player's round and hit-off performance are the same.

Rating - Glicko-2 rating, a modified and most would say improved version of Elo rating. Both are systems used to rank players in chess, tennis, football and many other sports. Players start their career at 1500 and move upwards or downwards from there, based on performance and strength of competition. A player's rating determines the badge:

  • Most Valuable Player: ≥ 1650
  • All-Star: ≥ 1600
  • Star: ≥ 1550
  • Majors: ≥ 1500
  • AAA: ≥ 1400
  • AA: ≥ 1300
  • A: ≥ 1200
  • Rookie: < 1200

HOF - Shows membership in the Home Run Derby Hall of Fame, which comprises players who have reached a milestone HOF Score. HOF Score is calculated as (match-up wins over other players + rounds played).

  • Gold: ≥ 300
  • Silver: ≥ 200
  • Bronze: ≥ 100
